Unexpected Steps

29 years ago I met the man I was going to marry. Of course, I didn’t know that then because I was pretty clueless when it came to matters of the heart.

Our first date was just hanging out at his house where we watched “The Exorcist”. It was the first time I had ever seen it. I thought he was fun and interesting and how great it was that I had a new friend.

Then, he learned my favorite song at the the time, “I Melt with You” by Modern English and sang it to me at my high school’s battle of the bands. Yet, I was still clueless.

A week later he took me to my prom, our second date. He would tell me later that when we were slow dancing and he held me in his arms, that was the moment he fell for me. I was still in the friend zone.

24 hours later that would change.

The day after prom he took me to a county fair. On top of a ferris wheel, he put his hand atop of mine, and a surge of electricity pulsated through my body. I thought to myself, “I think this is what love feels like”.

Two weeks later he stood by me at my high school graduation.

Four years later we were married.

It’s incredible to look back at a path paved for you. The unexpected stepping stones leading to a future blessed by His hand, is awe inspiring. Why should I be so surprised?

After all, it is written:

Within your heart you can make plans for your future,
but the Lord chooses the steps you take to get there.
” Proverbs 16:9

  1. Sweet story. 🙂 It’s crazy how all the little decisions we make throughout life lead to where we are; it’s interesting to think what might’ve happened if you had done this or hadn’t done that, etc.
